She specialises in identity management and has been awarded Microsoft MVP for nine consecutive years. Carol shares some of her journey in the world of IT which, despite being so male-domainated, has supported her through motherhood and international moves.
Carol has written a memoir, "IT Grrrl," which narrates her journey as a woman in IT. The title of the book was inspired by the Riot Grrrl movement of the 90s, which encouraged women to speak up and be creative. While writing this memoir, she has delved into the history of women in computing and then, sometimes surprising, factors that conspired to keep them out of the industry.
Carol wants more women to try technical roles for themselves, as part of finding the right job that suits them. She stresses that technical roles are not gender-specific, and women should not shy away from pursuing them. She also shares some ideas on how organisations can promote inclusivity and fairness in the workplace.

Monica Castillo is a data analyst at the Workplace Gender Equality, an Australian Government statutory agency (WGEA) responsible for promoting and improving gender equality in Australian workplaces. She holds a Bachelor of Social Research and Policy at the University of New South Wales. She first dabbled into data after completing a statistics course during her last year of university, where she fell in love with the idea of using data to inform decision making in policy, research, and service delivery. Since then, Monica has nearly 4 yearsâ experience working as a data professional in government, public health, and social services.
More recently, Monica has been working with gender data at WGEA and she has played a pivotal part in analysing and creating algorithms that report on the latest gender pay gap figures. Data from the ABS shows that women are paid 14 per cent less than men, where the average woman takes home $25K less than her male counterpart. (WiBD) a non-profit organization supporting over 18,000 members across 40+ countries to engage, connect and grow in the big data industry. Shala is currently the COO and co-founder of Job Pairing, an online technical hiring marketplace that supports individuals to leverage a new model of working that enables career based part-time work. The premise is that even though someone may need to work part-time they should still be a valued member of the team and advance in their careers.
Shala has a master's degree in computer science from Oregon State University and was previously an executive at Intel Corporation for over 30 years in technical, management, leadership, and innovation positions.
