Als journalist Eline Ronner op zoek gaat naar haar gestolen bitcoin, raakt ze via blockchainanalyse verstrikt in een witwasweb. Van het Kremlin tot het Witte Huis, iedereen lijkt te jagen op de miljardenbuit.
Het verhaal
In 2014 raakt Eline Ronner een paar bitcoins kwijt die ze heeft gestald bij MtGox, de eerste grote beurs waarop je in cryptovaluta kunt handelen. Helaas blijkt MtGox het slachtoffer van misschien wel de grootste en de beste bitcoin-roof aller tijden.
Uit blockchain-analyse blijkt dat hackers MtGox volledig hebben leeggeroofd. In totaal is er voor tientallen miljarden euro’s uit de virtuele kluis van de beurs verdwenen.
MtGox is slachtoffer van misschien wel de grootste en beste bitcoin roof aller tijden. De daders zijn nooit gepakt. In de podcast serie 'De Koude Crypto-oorlog' volgt Eline door middel van blockchain analyse het spoor van de gestolen bitcoins uit de virtuele kluis van MtGox.
Dit verhaal begint als een ordinaire cybercrime. Een diefstal. Een oude zaak. Inmiddels meer dan tien jaar geleden. Maar, wat als een diefstal begint, ontwikkelt zich tot een geopolitieke thriller die doet denken aan de Koude Oorlog. Het is een verhaal over gestolen bitcoins en een oorlog die niemand zag, tot nu. Wat is Blockchain analyse
Blockchain analyse heeft een grote rol gespeeld in de research voor deze podcast.Een blockchain is in feite een gedistribueerd grootboeksysteem dat bestaat uit blokken met goedgekeurde transacties. Deze technologie wordt vaak gebruikt in cryptovaluta zoals Bitcoin.
Iedere bitcoin transactie wordt vastgelegd in de blockchain. Je ziet bijvoorbeeld dat op een bepaald tijdstip adres A, 1 bitcoin heeft gestuurd naar adres B. Iedereen kan daarin grasduinen. Met blockchain analyse kunnen onderzoekers gegevens uit de blockchain halen en deze analyseren om informatie te krijgen en te duiden over transacties.
