Conversations about migration are often inside the box: numbers, causes, effect on the economy, how to prevent it. This podcast unboxes migration. It opens up questions on movement and justice and disrupts conventional thinking to better understand how mobility, in all its forms, is a necessary part of all our lives.
Our approach is creative, making connections between different types of movement, going beyond the human and across time. It is also critical, challenging assumptions and prioritising justice, as well as conceptual and research driven (we are academics after all!). We call this ‘The Bristol Approach’ to migration and mobilities.
Join Bridget Anderson, Director of Migration Mobilities Bristol (MMB), to open the migration box with a diverse group of guests. In each episode we invite two experts from different corners of the world to bring us their ideas on movement. Expect lively conversation – and perhaps some arguments too! – about all things migration and mobilities.

Imagine the vast, open ocean—a mysterious and boundless expanse that covers over 70% of our planet. In its deepest realms and along its extensive reaches resides one of the most magnificent creatures ever to have graced the Earth: the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus). To encounter a blue whale is to witness the grandeur of nature itself, an experience that stirs a sense of wonder and reverence for the natural world. These leviathans of the sea, the largest animals ever known to have existed, are a testament to the remarkable diversity and resilience of life on our planet. The Immensity of Blue Whales Blue whales are colossal. An adult blue whale can reach lengths of up to 100 feet (30 meters) and weigh as much as 200 tons. To put this into perspective, their tongues alone can weigh as much as an elephant, and their hearts are comparable in size to a small car. Despite their immense size, blue whales are graceful swimmers, capable of navigating the world's oceans with a majesty that belies their bulk. The sheer size of the blue whale is a marvel of evolution, an adaptation that has enabled them to dominate their marine environment. Their immense body size serves as a defense mechanism against predators, as very few creatures in the ocean can challenge a fully grown blue whale. Additionally, their size allows them to travel great distances and dive to profound depths in search of food. Feeding Habits and Diet Blue whales are filter feeders, relying on a specialized feeding mechanism to consume their primary food source: krill. Krill are tiny, shrimp-like crustaceans that aggregate in dense swarms in the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the world's oceans. During the feeding season, a blue whale can consume up to four tons of krill each day. The feeding process of blue whales is a spectacular sight. They employ a method known as lunge feeding, where they accelerate towards a swarm of krill with their mouths open, engulfing vast amounts of water and prey. Once their mouths are full, they close their jaws and use their baleen plates—composed of keratin, the same material as human hair and nails—to filter out the water, trapping the krill inside. This feeding strategy is highly efficient and allows blue whales to sustain their massive bodies. However, it also means that they must follow the seasonal movements of krill, migrating thousands of miles between their feeding grounds in the polar regions and their breeding grounds in warmer, tropical waters. Migration and Reproduction The migratory patterns of blue whales are among the most extensive of any animal on Earth. These epic journeys, spanning from the nutrient-rich waters of the Arctic and Antarctic to the equatorial breeding grounds, are essential for their survival and reproduction. During the summer months, blue whales feast on the abundant krill in the polar regions, building up fat reserves to sustain them during their long migration and the leaner winter months. Breeding typically occurs in warmer waters, where the calves are born. A blue whale's gestation period is about 10 to 12 months, resulting in the birth of a single calf. At birth, a blue whale calf can measure up to 25 feet (7.5 meters) in length and weigh around 3 tons. These newborns are nurtured with rich, fatty milk from their mothers, enabling them to grow at an astonishing rate of up to 200 pounds (90 kilograms) per day. The bond between a mother and her calf is profound and vital for the young whale's survival. For the first year of its life, the calf relies entirely on its mother's milk and protection. This period of intense care ensures that the calf develops the strength and skills necessary to navigate the vast ocean and eventually undertake the long migratory journeys of its species. The life cycle of a blue whale is a journey marked by incredible growth and adaptation. Once the calf is weaned, it begins to learn how to find and catch krill on its own. Juvenile blue whales face numerous challenges as they grow, including predation by orcas (killer whales) and the need to avoid human threats like ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements. Survival into adulthood requires a combination of luck, learning, and the innate resilience that characterizes these magnificent creatures. Communication and Social Structure Blue whales are often solitary creatures, but they are not entirely without social interactions. They communicate using a series of low-frequency vocalizations, which can travel across vast distances underwater. These vocalizations, often referred to as songs, play a crucial role in their social structure and mating behavior. The calls of blue whales are among the loudest sounds produced by any animal, reaching levels of up to 188 decibels. These deep, resonant sounds can be heard by other blue whales over distances of hundreds, even thousands of miles, allowing them to communicate across the vast expanses of the ocean. Scientists believe that these vocalizations are used to attract mates, navigate, and maintain social bonds with other whales. While blue whales are primarily solitary, they are occasionally observed in small groups, particularly during feeding or mating. These aggregations are usually temporary, formed for specific purposes, and then the whales disperse once their objective is achieved. Recent studies have shed light on the complexity of blue whale communication. Researchers have discovered that blue whale songs can vary geographically, with distinct populations exhibiting unique vocal patterns. This variation in songs suggests that blue whales may have culturally transmitted behaviors, similar to the regional dialects observed in some bird and primate species. Understanding these vocalizations is crucial for conservation efforts, as it helps scientists monitor population health and dynamics. Conservation and Threats Despite their immense size and seemingly invincible nature, blue whales have faced significant threats from human activities. During the 20th century, they were hunted to the brink of extinction by commercial whaling. The advent of industrial whaling techniques, such as the use of explosive harpoons and factory ships, enabled whalers to target blue whales on an unprecedented scale. At the height of whaling, tens of thousands of blue whales were slaughtered, driving their populations to critically low levels. By the time international whaling regulations were introduced in the mid-20th century, it was estimated that only a few thousand blue whales remained. Today, blue whales are protected under international law, and commercial whaling is largely prohibited. However, they continue to face numerous threats, including ship strikes, entanglement in fishing gear, and the impacts of climate change. The warming of the world's oceans and the associated shifts in krill distribution pose significant challenges to their survival, as they rely on specific habitats and prey availability for their sustenance. The recovery of blue whale populations is a testament to the effectiveness of international conservation efforts. Organizations such as the International Whaling Commission (IWC) have played a crucial role in implementing and enforcing whaling bans. However, the legacy of whaling lingers, and blue whale populations remain vulnerable. Continued vigilance is essential to ensure their long-term survival. The Importance of Conservation Efforts Conservation efforts have been instrumental in the gradual recovery of blue whale populations, but much work remains to be done. Protecting critical habitats, regulating shipping lanes, and reducing ocean pollution are essential measures to ensure the long-term survival of these majestic giants. Marine protected areas (MPAs) play a vital role in safeguarding blue whale habitats. These designated zones, where human activities are restricted or managed, provide safe havens for blue whales to feed, breed, and migrate without the threat of human interference. MPAs, combined with international cooperation and enforcement, are crucial for the effective conservation of blue whale populations. Research and monitoring are also essential components of blue whale conservation. By studying their behavior, migration patterns, and population dynamics, scientists can gain valuable insights into the health and status of blue whale populations. This knowledge informs conservation strategies and helps to identify and mitigate potential threats. Advances in technology have revolutionized our ability to study blue whales. Satellite tagging, for example, allows researchers to track the movements of individual whales in real-time, providing unprecedented insights into their migratory routes and habitat use. Acoustic monitoring systems have also proven invaluable, enabling scientists to detect and analyze blue whale vocalizations across vast oceanic regions. These tools are crucial for understanding the impacts of human activities on blue whales and for designing effective conservation measures. The Role of Climate Change Climate change represents one of the most significant long-term threats to blue whales and marine ecosystems. The warming of the world's oceans is altering the distribution and abundance of krill, the primary food source for blue whales. Changes in sea temperature and currents can disrupt the delicate balance of marine food webs, affecting the availability of prey for blue whales and other marine species. The melting of polar ice caps and the subsequent loss of sea ice habitats also pose challenges for blue whales. The retreat of sea ice can impact the productivity of krill populations, as these crustaceans rely on ice-algal communities for sustenance. Additionally, the reduction in sea ice coverage can expose blue whales to increased ship traffic and the associated risks of ship strikes and noise pollution. Mitigating the impacts of climate change requires global cooperation and concerted efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emiss
